What Neglect Can Do to Dynasty/Black Gold Oil Artist Brushes

It is commonly accepted that cleaning a fine artist oil brush is almost an art form unto itself. As a fine artist working on oil paintings, it is crucial to make a routine and a ritual out of cleaning the brushes after every use. It has to be almost as second-nature a set of motions as the types of strokes that you use to paint a tree, for example. You should create a routine, stick with it, and be consistent enough with it that you don’t even have to think about it at the end of painting sessions. If you do not make brush cleaning a central part of your artistic habits, very bad things will quickly happen to your brushes and this will cost you both time and money.

Oil painting has a major tradeoff: the ability to produce amazing, sometimes seamless blending and gradation, as well as building up layer after layer of luminance the way the renaissance masters did. You will depend upon high quality flat brushes to create the bases and foundations for the images, round brushes for all the fine details, and fan brushes for the gentle and perfect blending.

 However, neglected or improper cleaning will cause deposits of dried paint between the bristles, causing them to lose their uniformity. It is also important to note that the bristles are meant to be resilient like stalks and be able to bounce back to their natural upright form. Bristles can get damaged and bent through neglect. Furthermore, the generally fine tips of the brush can become tangled and twisted, meaning that the strokes will lose their softness and consistency.

The end result of all this damage is that the flat brushes will not offer smooth even surfaces but have unsightly gaps, the round brushes will stop being able to offer any detail but rather will leave misshapen lumps in a line, and the fan brushes will leave odd, irregular spaced out marks instead of smooth blending.

Dynasty Fine Artist Brushes: An Extension of the Inner Mind of the Artist

When a fine artist picks up their brush, they are not just making marks on the canvas, but they are using that brush to express what they are feeling… what they are thinking. There are many categories of fine artists, but when mentioning a fine artist, the specific reference here is to one who expresses their thoughts and feelings through great detail. Their thoughts may come at lightning speed, or they may come with deep thought before each additional stroke is added to the canvas. Their tools for expression are fine artist brushes. This post deals with oil and acrylic brushes only. Watercolor brushes are a whole other category.
